California tint law
California Window Tint Law
What you can tint on each window of your car in California, in plain words, from the Vehicle Code.

- Windshield: top strip only
- Front sides: clear UV film only
- Rear and back: any shade
Window by window
How dark can you tint in California?
The same rules apply to cars, SUVs, trucks and vans.
Why the front windows are different
Drivers and police need to see in and out of the front side windows, so California allows only clear UV film there. We can still fit clear film that blocks UV.
Mirrors and the back window
Tint on the back window is fine in any shade as long as your car has outside mirrors on both sides, which almost every car does.
We check before we tint
We go through the rules with you before we start, so your car is tinted to California law.
This is a plain summary of California Vehicle Code §26708. Laws change, so check with the DMV if you’re unsure.
